Manchester United forward Vauth Weghorst touched the "This is Anfield" sign before the start of the English league match against Liverpool as the players entered the pitch from the tunnel.
Interestingly, this plaque is traditionally only touched by Liverpool players, as it is iconic to the Merseysiders. Weghorst also decided to touch the plaque, receiving quite a bit of criticism from the fans afterwards.
After the game, which ended in a devastating 7-0 victory for Liverpool, Weghorst explained his act:
"Normally I don't react to media topics, but this topic deserves it because you, the amazing United fans, are important to me. I just want to explain. I learned in the national team that Virgil van Dijk always touches that sign, so I decided to stop him from touching the sign to try to piss him off before the game.
I always supported Twente as a kid, and now that I'm a Manchester United player, my loyalty to this amazing club cannot be questioned.
Sunday was a terrible day for all of us, we are doing our best to get better in the coming weeks. Together we will recover from this and reach our goals this season," said Weghorst.
