Brighton thought they had taken the lead in the 55th minute after Danny Welbeck's goal, but the goal was cancelled out due to handball. Brighton's frustration continued soon after when they were left ten men down after a red card received by Romulo De Zerbi. However, Tottenham were also left with ten men after Carlos Stellini was sent off. Tensions further increased when Brighton's Pascal Gross was yellow-carded in the 64th minute. Brighton made their first substitution as Welbeck was replaced by Enoch Ferguson.
Tottenham's Ivan Perisic also received a yellow card in the 67th minute. Brighton substituted A. Webster for L. Colville in the 69th minute. Tottenham made their first substitution in the 78th minute with D. Kulusevski replacing A. Danjuma. This substitution was crucial as Tottenham's Harry Kane scored in the 79th minute, much to the delight of the home fans. Soon Brighton made a third substitution, replacing J. Weltman on 85 minutes. Veltman was replaced by J. Enciso in the 85th minute. The match continued to be action packed, with Tottenham player Pierre-Emile Højbjerg receiving a yellow card in the 87th minute. A second substitution for Tottenham - Oliver Skipp came on in place of P.M. Sarra in the 88th minute. The game ended on a slightly sad note when Tottenham player Christian Romero also received a yellow card in the 90th minute. Tottenham's final substitution, J. Tanganga came on in place of Perisic in added time. The final score was 2-1 in favor of Tottenham. The match was a fantastic display of both teams' skill and determination.
