Felipe, a Nottingham Forest player, was cautioned by the referee for misconduct. The action continued after a missed penalty by Nottingham Forest player B. Johnson after just seven minutes, leaving the fans in suspense. On 14 minutes, Nottingham Forest made the first substitution of the game: M. Niakhate was replaced by D. Worrall. The substitution seemed to have served the team well as Brighton's F Buonanotte scored the first goal of the match on 38 minutes. However, just before the break Nottingham Forest responded with an own goal from P. Gross to level the score at 1-1. In the second half, Nottingham Forest made one more substitution: on 65 minutes, N. Williams was replaced by K. Kouyat.

The match became exciting in the final minutes: on 90 minutes, a penalty kick was awarded to Nottingham Forest. M. Gibbs-White, coming on target, scored the third and final goal of the match. However, there were still events in the game and Brighton scored in the last minute, which was eventually cancelled out due to offside. Nottingham Forest's K Navas also received a yellow card in the 90th minute for misconduct. The supporters left the stadium excited by the thrilling match and Nottingham Forest's hard-fought victory.
