In a thrilling La Liga match between Club Athletic and Sevilla, the home crowd at the San Mames Barrià stadium were left with their hearts broken as Sevilla won 1-0. Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half but the score remained 0-0 at the break. Two Athletic goals were cancelled out due to offside, the first by N. Williams in the 8th minute and the second by G. Guruseta in the 16th minute. Sevilla's E. Lamela was yellow-carded in the 38th minute and just before the break, M. Acuna was yellow-carded. At the beginning of the second half, Sevilla made a 46th-minute substitution, replacing E. Lamela with B. Gil.
This substitution bore fruit as Sevilla began to dominate midfield and put pressure on the Athletic defence. Sevilla continued to make substitutions: I. Rakitic came on in place of P. Gueye in the 55th minute and J. Navas came on in place of G. Montiel in the 56th minute. Suso also came on as a substitute in the 56th minute in place of Papa Gomez. Athletic made their first substitution in the 66th minute, replacing G. Guruzzeta with A. Berenguer. However, it was Sevilla who scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute, from a penalty kick scored by L. Ocampos. Athletic Cluj players I. Alvarez and R. Garcia received yellow cards in the final minutes of the game. Despite their best efforts, Athletic failed to score and Sevilla came away with three points. The game featured some exciting moments and showed the competitive nature of La Liga football.
