Liverpool held their 1-0 lead at Anfield against a Brentford stand-off in a game in which both teams received a flurry of yellow cards. The hosts opened the scoring in the 13th minute thanks to a fortunate strike from Mohamed Salah. Brentford responded but were thwarted time and again by Liverpool's powerful defence and the outstretched palms of goalkeeper Alisson. Virgil van Dijk became the first player to find himself in referee Mike Dean's notebook after he was shown a yellow card for a sloppy tackle against the Brentford striker.
His example was soon followed by Brian Mbeumo, tripping over Liverpool's Jordan Henderson. Fabinho was next cautioned, followed soon after by Ibrahima Konate, who had just transferred from RB Leipzig in the summer. Just before the break, Brentford's Rico Henry received a yellow card. In the second half, both managers made substitutions to try and turn the game in their favour. Liverpool introduced young Luis Diaz, while Brentford released Kelvin Schade and Josh Dasilva. Diogo Jota replaced the injured Jordan Henderson. Alisson was sent off for stalling after a shot on goal as Liverpool struggled to hold the lead. Liverpool's Curtis Jones and Andrew Robertson also gave way to James Milner and Kostas Tsimikas. For Brentford's side, Vitaly Janelt and Matthias Damsgaard came on in place of Frank Onyeka and Sergi Canos, while Aaron Hickey replaced Yannick Wyss in the final minutes of the game. Despite some nervy moments in the closing stages, Liverpool were able to see the game through to the end and take all three points in the first meeting against newly promoted Premier League side Brentford. The win lifts Liverpool into third place in the table, with Brentford remaining in the middle of the table.
The next fixtures are Leicester v Liverpool and Brentford v West Ham.
