In what proved to be a highly competitive Ligue 1 match, Lens beat Marseille 2-1 at the Stade Bollaert-Délélis. With both teams desperate for a win, the match was always going to be tense and it did not disappoint. The first half was a tense affair, with both teams trying to play on the basis of possession. Marseille, however, had more chances when in the 8th minute A. Sanchez cancelled out a goal for a foul. A few minutes later, Lens received their first yellow card of the game when J. Onana was sent off. F Medina was also suspended late in the half. As the half went on, Lens started to pull into the game and took the lead on 42 minutes thanks to a goal from S. Fofana. However, Lens were awarded two more yellow cards during extra time when P Frankowski and Onana were sent off. Marseille started the second half energetically and made two substitutions to try and get back into the game.
However, Lens were the next to score: in the 60th minute, L. Openda struck his opponent's goal. The game became increasingly heated, with both teams receiving more and more yellow cards. Marseille made three substitutions, including D. Payet, who immediately distinguished himself by scoring in the 88th minute, creating a tense last few minutes. Lens held out, but victory was very close. Both teams played hard but Lens took the lead. Despite the loss, Marseille played well and they will be looking to bounce back in the next game. The win allowed Lens to climb up the Ligue 1 table and they will be looking to build on that result in the coming games. Overall, it was an exciting game with plenty of drama and excitement. The fans at the Bollert-Delais Stadium enjoyed some great football and both teams can take positives from this match. It was an exciting advertisement for the quality of Ligue 1 football and it shows why the league continues to grow in popularity around the world.
