The 28-year-old footballer was accused of raping a woman in October 2020 and attempting to rape another woman two years earlier. It was alleged that both incidents took place in his home.

Earlier this year, Mendy was found not guilty of six counts of rape, but two other charges were adjourned for retrial in the summer. He has now been acquitted of both charges by a 12-member jury in Chester Crown Court.

It will be recalled that the first charges were brought by the police against Mendy back in August 2021, and he was remanded in custody while his contract with Manchester City was still in force. The Frenchman's deal with the Citizens expired at the end of June, as he had not played for the club for almost two years.
