Seven PAOK fans sentenced to life in prison for the premeditated murder of an Aris fan

The high-profile case opened against 12 PAOK fans in Greece over the murder of a 19-year-old Aris fan ended this week. Both football teams represent the city of Thessaloniki.

On the night of 1 February 2022, after the Aris vs PAOK match (4:2), the 12 defendants, armed with knives and iron bars, rioted in the streets of Thessaloniki. Among other things, they attacked 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos and four of his friends after they learnt that they were Aris fans.

As a result of the attack, Campanos died of his injuries and two others were hospitalised with varying degrees of injuries.

As a result of the trial, the court handed down an extremely harsh sentence. Seven of the defendants were found guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The other five received 19 years in prison for accessory after the fact. The oldest convict was 26 years old.
