"I wanted Ronaldo to stay so they could find a way to work together until the end of the season. But after the interview with Piers Morgan it became impossible. It was such a public gesture that there was only one way out.

I love Cristiano. He probably doesn't love me for what I said, but I want to think that in 5-10 years he will realise that I made comments with good intentions. I wanted him to understand that when you turn 35-36, the younger and less talented players in the locker room rely on you. There are different ways to be a mentor, a coach and even a father in a way.

Ronaldo is still my favourite player of all time. That's who I pick when I talk about the greatest player of all time. I know a lot of people will name Messi, but I love Cristiano," Neville told Marca.
