With a one-man advantage, Slovenia kept their composure and looked to increase their lead. However, the Northern Ireland defence stood firm despite the loss of one player. Throughout the match, both teams made several substitutions in an attempt to bring fresh energy and new ideas into the game. In the 76th minute, Slovenia introduced J. Mlakar and S. Lovric into the game. Lovric, followed by A. Sporar and J. Kurtić. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland made three substitutions in the 63rd minute, bringing on D. Taylor, G. Saville and I. Price. In the 87th minute, Northern Ireland made their last substitution: B. Lyons replaced K. McMenamin. As time went on, tension grew and in the 88th minute Northern Ireland's J. Evans was shown another yellow card. Despite all efforts, Northern Ireland failed to equalise and the match ended 0-1 in favour of Slovenia. The match at Windsor Park demonstrated the intensity and competitiveness of both teams. Slovenia's first goal was decisive and Northern Ireland's task became more difficult after the suspension of S. Charles. As a result, Slovenia won the match, securing a crucial victory in their European Championship qualifying campaign.
