"Mainz announced on its official website that it has terminated its cooperation with midfielder Anwar El Ghazi.
"El Ghazi, in his already deleted message, chose a position on the conflict in the Middle East that is unacceptable to the club. Before the decision to terminate the contract, a detailed conversation took place between the club management and the player.
"Mainz understands that there may be different opinions on the conflict in the Middle East, which has been going on for years. However, the club clearly distances itself from El Ghazi's message, which is not in line with the club's values," the German club said in a statement.
The 28-year-old Dutchman of Moroccan descent used the phrase "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" in his post, which is considered extremist.
