French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin commented on a post by Al Ittihad forward Karim Benzema, who supported the people of Gaza.
"One might ask oneself what a footballer is doing by tweeting political views, and why he does it selectively. I personally think that there is something behind it, and to ignore it is to be naive.
You can ask why the Minister of the Interior is responding to a footballer's tweet, but when it affects so many followers - 20 million people - I think my role is to condemn it," RMC Sport quoted Darmanen as saying.
