The head coach of Spanish Barcelona Xavi commented on the defeat of his team from Shakhtar Donetsk (0:1) in yesterday's match of the 4th round of the Champions League group stage.
"We have to admit that in this match we had a number of problems. Sometimes we didn't understand what the game required of us at all. We lost a lot of balls and were completely ineffective on the flanks. And mistakes at this level are costly. We tried, but trying is not enough.
Yes, our reaction to the conceded goal in the second half was good, the intensity of our actions improved, but all that was again not enough - it was absolutely not the way we should have acted both in attack and in defence. These may all be small details, but again, at this level they are costly.
There was nothing that went to plan in our game today. This match is a step backwards. We played one of the worst games in these two years, and at the worst possible moment. The Champions League is a competition that requires the highest level, and today we played as if we were not in this tournament.
We leave the pitch angry. It's a shame, because today we wanted to qualify for the next round (it was enough for Barcelona not to lose - editor's note). We had no right to lose. But we lost. A huge mistake," Xavi said after the match against Chater.
