Spain dominate Cyprus in European Championship qualifier In a much-anticipated European Championship qualifier, Cyprus faced a powerful Spain at the Alfamega Stadium. Cyprus tried to regain composure, but Spain's relentless attacks proved too difficult for them. In the 17th minute, Cypriot Anderson Correia received a yellow card, indicating the growing pressure on the Cypriots. Spain continued to control the game and in the 22nd minute M. Oyarzabal scored. Just six minutes later Joselu increased Spain's lead to an impressive 3-0. Close to the break, Spain made their first substitution, replacing M. Oyarzabal with R. Riquelme. This substitution did little to disrupt the rhythm of Spain's play and Spain continued to dominate the match. Cyprus also made changes at half-time, with Anderson Correia replacing K. Pileas, K. Kyriacou replacing K. Haralampus and H. Kyprianou replacing D. Spolaric.
In the second half, both teams made further substitutions, trying to turn the game in their favour. Cyprus replaced A. Karo with I. Kousoulos, and then introduced A. Kakoullis into the game, and Spain - R. Le Normande and M. Me. Le Normande and M. Merino. In the 65th minute, J. Navas replaced D. Carvajal, adding freshness to the attack. Cyprus responded with I. Kosoulos replacing A. Caro. In the 75th minute, when K. Pileas scored, Cyprus managed to find a glimmer of hope. The crowd on the pitch erupted in joy, anticipating a possible return goal. However, Spain, not allowing further developments, tightened their defence: Cypriots A. Karo, I. Kousoulos, D. Spolarich and Spaniard R. Riquelme received yellow cards. Riquelme received yellow cards. Both teams fought hard until the final whistle, but Spain won 3-1. Although Cyprus showed moments of resilience, it was Spain's exceptional play that was the main jewel of the encounter. Their clinical finishing and skillful play showed why they are one of the favourites to succeed in the Euro Championship. Cyprus must regroup and learn from this defeat to continue their journey in the qualification phase.
