The match got off to an exciting start with Marseille being awarded a penalty in the 8th minute. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang converted the penalty to give his team the lead. As the first half progressed, tension was building and in the 36th minute, Rennes' Benjamin Santamaria received a yellow card. The Rennes manager made an early substitution in the 40th minute, replacing Adrien Theate with Wissam Omari in an attempt to boost the attack. Marseille made a substitution at half-time, replacing Jacques Clausse with Milan Murillo in the 46th minute. The second half started with Rennes also making a substitution, with Santamaria being replaced by Arnaud Calimuendo in the 58th minute. However, in the 61st minute, Rennes received a red card when they were left with ten men: Clement Vuh received a red card. Taking advantage of the numerical advantage, Marseille increased their lead in the 65th minute when Ali Unai delighted their fans. In the 68th minute, Marseille were also suspended ten men as Ismaila Ndiaye received a red card.
This setback didn't stop the team and in the 70th minute they made two quick substitutions: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came on in place of Vitinho and Issa Sarr was replaced by Leonardo Balerdi. As the game approached its final stages, tensions began to rise again. In the 76th minute, Rennes' Nemanja Matic received a yellow card for a rash tackle. In the 78th minute, Marseille decided to increase their lead, but the goal was cancelled due to an offside offence. Both teams continued to make substitutions to freshen up their lineups. In the 79th minute, Rennes introduced Benjamin Bourijo in place of Lucas Assignon, and then Eduardo Le Fe came on in place of Ludovic Blas. In the 79th minute, Martin Terrier replaced Bilal Yildirim. In the heat of things, Marseille player F.R. Mouguet received a yellow card in the 81st minute for a late challenge. Marseille made their last substitution in the 87th minute, bringing on Adil Harith as they looked to maintain their lead. In the final minutes of the game, in the 90th minute, a yellow card was shown to Amine Guiri of Rennes, which summed up a very eventful encounter.
