For the first time in history, an English Premier League match will be officiated by a woman. Rebecca Welch, who has been appointed to officiate the match of the 18th round of the English Premier League between Fulham and Burnley, will make history.
Rebecca Welch began her career as a referee back in 2010. In 2021 she worked at a League 2 match, and in the 2021/22 season the referee gained experience at two Championships matches.
And that's not the only surprise in the APL. For the first time in 15 years, a dark-skinned referee - Sam Allison - has been appointed. His predecessor was Juraya Rennie, who last refereed at this level in 2008.
"These are pivotal moments for Rebecca and Sam, two high calibre referees. They deserve this opportunity," said Head of Judges Howard Webb.
