The Burnley defence was stunned and the home crowd hushed. "Everton" continued to attack relentlessly, and in the 25th minute M. Keane succeeded in scoring a goal for his team. The Burnley defence seemed unable to contain the Everton onslaught, and this goal further strengthened the visitors' advantage in the game. The Everton supporters broke into joyous shouts, while the Burnley fans were left disappointed and hoping for a comeback. At the start of the second half both teams made substitutions in an attempt to change the course of the match. Burnley replaced J. Rodriguez with L. Foster, while Everton brought on A. Doucoure, who replaced L. Dobbin. The substitutions brought fresh energy into the game and Burnley began to show signs of a potential comeback. However, Everton's defence remained unwavering, preventing Burnley from scoring.

In the 70th minute Burnley made a second substitution, replacing H. Delcroix for A. Al Dakhil.
