FIFA has announced the renewal of the Intercontinental Cup from 2024, which has been completely superseded by the Club World Cup since 2005.
The FIFA Intercontinental Cup will now be played annually between the winners of the international tournaments of each confederation. The tournament will consist of several stages.
In the first round of Stage A, the winner of the Asian or African Champions League will play the winner of the Oceania Champions League at their home stadium.
In the next round, the winner of that pair will play the remaining AFC or CAF representative - with the order of African and Asian teams in 2024 to be determined by draw and then alternate each year.
The B phase will see the winners of the CONCACAF Cup and the Libertadores Cup play each other, with the home team determined by a draw, after which the hosting rights will rotate between the confederations each year.
The final part of the tournament will be played on a neutral pitch. The winner of the match between the teams that win the 'A' and 'B' stages will play the winner of the UEFA Champions League in the final.
In 2024, the Intercontinental Cup will be played from 14 December to 18 December.
