In England, the referee showed the player a round red card

Yesterday, the match between Brentford and Wolverhampton in the FA Cup ended 1-1. In the 9th minute of the match, Wolves midfielder João Gomes received a straight red card for a foul.

Referee Tony Harrington showed the Portuguese a round card. Why did the referee use an atypical card shape?

Round and oval cards were originally introduced to help players who were unable to distinguish colours. In addition, this shape was made for the convenience of the referees themselves. The shape served as a clue as to which card should be taken out.

This is not the first case in recent times. Last season, referee Dean Whitestone showed an unusual card during a match between Wrexham and Sheffield United.
