Former Bayern Munich and German national team player Franz Beckenbauer has died at the age of 78, Sky reports, citing the Kaiser family.
"It is with deep sadness that we announce that our husband and father Franz Beckenbauer died peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family," the family said.
Beckenbauer was one of the most prominent figures in the world of football. He is one of only three people to have won the World Cup as both a player and a coach. He first triumphed in 1974 at his home World Cup. He won the 1990 World Cup in Italy as head coach of the Bundesliga side.
