West Ham London midfielder Pablo Fornals recalled one of the most significant goals of his former team-mate, Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko. We are talking about the return match of the 1/8 finals of the Europa League season-2021/22 with Spanish Sevilla (2:0), in which the current player of Kyiv Dynamo scored the decisive goal for his team in extra time - that goal Yarmolenko took West Ham to the quarter-finals (the first meeting of the rivals ended with a victory of Sevilla with a score of 1:0).
"It was just that period of time when Russia invaded Ukraine (the match between West Ham and Sevilla took place on 17 March 2022 - ed.) and, quite understandably, it was really hard times for Andriy.
A few days before the match with Sevilla, Yarmolenko scored against Aston Villa in APL, and it was also a special moment both for Andriy and for all of us. That day he really felt the love of the fans.
And then he scored the winning goal against Sevilla in the Europa League. In that episode I shot, Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou deflected the shot, but Yarma was there and managed to send the ball into the goal!
It was an important moment for him and for the whole team. It was beautiful. I remember him crying then and it was really a difficult time for him. We all just wanted to help our friend, our teammate stay as strong as possible. For him to score that goal and get us into the quarter-finals was really special," Fornals was quoted as saying by West Ham's official website.
