Sports doctor Dmytro Babeliuk, known for his work at Lviv's Rukh, spoke about the nature of the injury suffered by Ukrainian Girona striker Viktor Tsygankov in yesterday's 2-0 Spanish league match against Osasuna.
"Tsygankov has damaged the medial knee ligament and is likely to miss the national team's matches.
During the fight for the ball, there was contact with an opponent, which led to a bend in the inside of the knee.
The player immediately felt discomfort and clearly localised the problem. Viktor tried to continue the game, but after running with a change of direction, he asked for a substitute. Running with a change of direction is a typical test for the function of the medial ligament.
After the substitution, the doctors put ice on the medial collateral ligament in his knee.
As for the timing, even with a minimal injury, the player needs at least a month to recover. The first game against Bosnia is in 11 days (we are talking about the semi-final play-off match of the Euro 2024 qualifying round between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine on 26 March - ed.)
The last such case with an identical injury happened to Trent, who was allowed to play after three weeks, which led to a relapse and a minimum 2-month suspension.
There is hope that the injury will not be serious, but there is very little chance that the player will be able to help the national team without harming his health," Babeliuk wrote on his telegram channel.
