Gary Lineker has proposed removing extra time from Champions League play-off matches

Legendary English forward Gary Lineker has proposed an interesting reform of the Champions League. The ex-footballer believes that extra time should be removed from play-off matches.

"The only thing we should get rid of now, purely out of fairness, is extra time if the results are equal after two games. I think we should go straight to penalties.

At the moment it gives the home team an extra half hour on their own pitch in the return match, which is an advantage. No team should have an advantage at the Champions League quarter-final stage.

In the 1/8 finals, teams play the return match at home because they earned it with their performance in the group stage. This is not the case in the quarter-finals.

If Arsenal draw with Bayern at the Allianz Arena next week, there will be extra time and Bayern will get an extra half hour on their home pitch. That doesn't seem fair to me," Lineker said.
