Ihor Surkis: "The good memory of Mykhailo Fomenko will remain with us forever"

Sad news has shaken the football community today. At the age of 76, the outstanding Dynamo footballer and former Ukrainian national team player Mykhailo Fomenko passed away. On behalf of the club, Dynamo President Igor Surkis expressed his condolences on Mykhailo Fomenko's death.

Mikhail Fomenko

"It was with a sense of deep sorrow that I received the black news of the death of Mikhail Ivanovich Fomenko.

He was a key member of Valery Lobanovsky's legendary team. Three USSR championships, two national cups, the Cup of Cups and the UEFA Super Cup were won with Fomenko's direct participation. As a member of the USSR national team, he became the 1972 European vice-champion and bronze medallist at the 1976 Olympics.

After finishing his playing career, Mikhail Fomenko found his calling as a talented coach. He will forever be remembered as the coach who led Dynamo to the first championship of independent Ukraine in 1992/1993.

He also became one of the most successful coaches of the Ukrainian national football team, which he led from 2012 to 2016. His greatest success with the national team was reaching the 2016 European Championships.

On behalf of all Dynamo players and myself, I express my deepest condolences to Mykhailo Ivanovych's family, all his relatives and friends. May he rest in peace, and may his memory remain in the hearts of those who knew, appreciated and loved him. I grieve with everyone who cared about this wonderful man. The good memory of Mykhailo Fomenko will remain with us forever."

Вже пам'ятаю його як тренера. Коли він тренував Гурію, потім Металіст, трохи Динамо, Таврію і збірну. Трохи був жорсткий тренер, але футбол розумів добре
