The 1986 season was very successful for Dynamo. On 2 May in France, Valeriy Lobanovskiy's wards won their second Cup Winners' Cup on the field of Gerlan Stadium.
On their way to the final, the Kyiv team knocked out Utrecht (Netherlands), Universitatea (Romania), Rapid (Austria) and Dukla (Czech Republic).
In the final Dynamo players met with Atletico (Madrid) and defeated the Spaniards with the score 3:0. Zavarov, Blokhin and Yevtushenko scored goals against Filol, the goalkeeper of the Madrid club. Together with the authors of the goals that evening the joy of Dynamo fans was brought by: Chanov, Bessonov, Baltacha, Bal, Kuznetsov, Demyanenko, Rats, Yakovenko, Yaremchuk, Belanov,
"Dynamo" won the gold medal of the championship of the former USSR for the twelfth time. In the final match of the championship on the 7th of December on their field with the score 2:1 the Kyivians defeated their Moscow teammates, their main pursuers.
In 30 matches of the championship the Kyivians scored 53 goals in the opponents' gates, having conceded 33. The most productive player for Dynamo was Belanov, who scored 10 goals.
Oleg Blokhin became the champion for the seventh time, repeating Vladimir Muntean's record. Valeriy Lobanovskyi won the title of champions with his Dynamo charges for the seventh time in 13 seasons. It was the highest coaching achievement in football in the history of the former USSR. Also in the season of 1986, Dynamo won the USSR Cup for the second time in a row.
In June 1986 in Mexico, the USSR national team was waiting for the XIII World Football Championship. Head coach of the team, Valery Lobanovsky, included in its composition 12 Dynamo players: Chanov, Bal, Bessonov, Demyanenko, Kuznetsov, Ratsa, Yakovenko, Yaremchuk, Zavarov, Belanov, Blokhin and Yevtushenko.
In the opening match our team "knocked out" with a score of 6:0 Hungary. Three goals were scored by Dynamo players: Yakovenko, Belanov and Yaremchuk. Then followed a draw with France - 1:1 (Rats scored a goal). In the final match in the group with Canada our team won - 2:0 (Blokhin, Zavarov).
In the 1/4 finals our team lost to Belgium. In one of the attacks the Spanish referee recorded an offside position. The national team defenders reacted to this signal and stopped. However, the referee's whistle in the field was silent. The Belgians levelled the score 2:2 and took the game into extra time, in which the USSR national team lost 3:4 to the opponent, in matches with whom we have always been successful before. "Hat-trick" Igor Belanov, the first of our players at the World Championships served as a weak consolation.
"The mistake of the chief referee excluded the USSR national team from the applicants for the medals of the Mundial. The team won sympathy" - wrote one of the Mexican newspapers.
Failure in Mexico almost the same team compensated for a successful start in the qualifying cycle of the World Cup -1988, in the final part of which the wards of Valery Lobanovsky in Munich on the field "Olympiastadion" lost to the Dutch team 0:2.
Vice-champions of Europe returned to Kiev: Chanov, Demyanenko, Bessonov, Baltacha, Rats, Zavarov, Mikhailichenko, Kuznetsov, Litovchenko, Protasov, Belanov.
The season of 1986 can be called a stellar one for FC Dynamo. Two Dynamo players became winners of two prestigious referendums: Igor Belanov became the owner of the "Golden Ball", and Aleksandr Zavarov was named the best football player of the country.
And how only Dynamo team of that time was not called: "Miracle team", "Kyiv Express", "Phenomenal team".
