News from the camp of Ukraine's Euro 2024 group rival. The centre-back of the Belgian national team and Anderlecht Jan Vertonghen was injured in the last match for his club.
The 37-year-old footballer started from the first minutes of the match of the 37th round of the Belgian championship with "Union", but already in the 33rd minute of the meeting received a groin injury and could not continue the game.
There is no information about the severity of Vertonghen's injury and the timing of his recovery. Anderlecht coach Bryan Riemer expressed optimism about the defender's condition, saying that his replacement was mainly for precautionary reasons. However, the Belgian media clearly do not share the mentor's sentiments, fearing that Vertonghen now risks missing Euro 2024, which starts in just over a month. The player himself will undergo a medical examination today, following which the exact diagnosis will be established.
Note that Vertonghen is the main defender of the national team of Belgium. He played in seven of the eight matches of the qualifying cycle of Euro 2024 (and scored one goal), and in all these cases was in the starting line-up of his national team.
