The result of the match of the final 38th round of the Italian championship between Atalanta and Torino (3:0) determined the fate of Dynamo Kyiv at the draw of the 2nd qualifying round of the Champions League season-2024/25 in the non-championship path (it is from this stage that the Bilo-Syni will start their way in the tournament).
Atalanta have now secured a trip to the main stage of the Champions League through the results of their national championship. But earlier, the Bergamo side had won the right to play in this tournament as winners of the Europa League.
In these circumstances, according to UEFA regulations, Atalanta will go to the Champions League as the representative of the Italian championship, and the vacant place of the Europa League winner in the main stage of the Champions League will be taken by the team that has the highest UEFA club coefficient among all participants of the Champions League qualification without exception (both in the way of champions and non-champions). In this case, it's Portuguese side Benfica (club coefficient 79.000), who nominally have to start from the 3rd qualifying round via the non-championship route.
"The void that will be created when Benfica moves to the Champions League main draw will be filled as follows. The number of participants in the 2nd qualifying round of the non-championship route will be reduced from six to four: the two teams in this stage with the highest club coefficient (in this case it is Czech Slavia and Austrian Salzburg) will automatically advance to the 3rd qualifying round of the non-championship route.
As a result, the composition of the baskets in the draw for this stage will be as follows (the UEFA club coefficient is shown opposite).
Seeded
"Fenerbahce (Istanbul, Turkey) - 36.000
Dynamo (Kyiv, Ukraine) - 26.500
Unseeded
"Partizan (Belgrade, Serbia) - 25.500
Lugano (Switzerland) - 8.000.
We would like to add that the draw for the 2nd qualification round of the Champions League will be held on 18 June, and the matches of this stage will be played on 23/24 July and 30/31 July.
Eight teams will play in the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League: the mentioned Slavia and Salzburg, the two winners of the second qualification, the fourth team of France (Lille), the third team of the Netherlands (Twente), as well as the vice-champions of Belgium (Union St. Juliaz) and Scotland (Rangers).
Assuming that the 2nd qualifying round will be completed by the "seeded", the preliminary composition of the baskets for the draw for the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League on the non-championship route will look as follows.
Seeded
"Rangers" (Glasgow, Scotland) - 63.000
"Slavia" (Prague, Czech Republic) - 53.000
"Salzburg" ( Austria ) - 50.000
"Lille" ( France) - 47.000
Unseeded
"Fenerbahce" (Istanbul, Turkey) - 36.000
"Union St. Gillois" (Brussels, Belgium) - 27.000
"DINAMO" ( Kiev, Ukraine ) - 26.500
"Twente" (Enschede, Netherlands) - 12.260.
The draw for the 3rd qualification of the Champions League will be held on 22 July, and the matches of this stage will take place on 6/7 August and 13 August. The winners will advance to the play-off round, where they will qualify for the Champions League group stage.
