Former Portugal international Fernando Santos has been appointed head coach of the Azerbaijani national team.
"The regular meeting of the AFFA Executive Committee was held online. The discussions emphasized the need to form a strong, competitive and successful national team, as well as the development of children's football in our country.
In this regard, it was decided to appoint Fernando Santos as the head coach of the Azerbaijani national team, taking into account his extensive experience as one of the world's football specialists, his successes in his professional career, in particular at the European Championships with the Portuguese national team.
Given that the process will not be short-term, but will cover a certain period, the Portuguese specialist is tasked with forming a competitive team and successfully performing at the qualifying stage of Euro 2028," the AFFA statement said.
