Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu (son of former Dynamo Kyiv coach Mircea Lucescu), summarizing the performance of his country's national team at Euro 2024, touched upon its opening match at the tournament - against Ukraine (3-0).
"Assessing the performance of the Romanian national team at Euro 2024, there is no point in saying, "Oooh, it was fantastic!", but we can definitely say that the team has made a very good step forward. And this is a moment of hope for Romanian soccer.
In the end, this is a tournament where we won one match, lost two and drew once. And, of course, the big question is how the Romanian national team would have fared had it not won that first match against Ukraine. But the fact that we got out of the group shows that there is hope.
Another thing is that in soccer, a specific situation, a specific opponent and how you yourself play at that particular moment matter a lot. The same Ukraine was considered stronger than us on paper. But in this particular match we managed to play in such a way that we caught the Ukrainians on their superficial attitude to us and unpreparedness. We found the opponent's weakness and took full advantage of it. In this respect, we were at our best. But it is important that this does not happen in a single match," Gazeta Sporturilor quoted Lucescu Jr. as saying.
