Ferdinand: "De Ligt hasn't been in the starting lineup in recent years, and MU is buying him for £45-50 million"

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has questioned the club's decision to sign Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Matthijs de Ligt

"I watched him at Ajax and he was brilliant that year under Erik ten Heg when they reached the Champions League semifinals and lost to Tottenham. He was brilliant, team player, everything you want from a defender.

Then he had a lot of injuries, he hasn't been in the starting lineup for the last two or three years, and MU is spending 45-50 million pounds on him. Is he going to come to MU and make a difference? I think it will be a big challenge for him and all eyes will be on him. I think there's a lot of uncertainty around this signing because of his previous seasons at Juventus and Bayern Munich, which didn't go as well as we expected.

I don't think he's going to solve MU's problems defensively, but it's a great opportunity for the player himself to come in and say, "You know what, guys? I'm going to fix my last couple of seasons. It wasn't the real me and I'm going to prove it,'" Rio said on his YouTube channel.
