Florin Cernat: "I was diagnosed with cancer, that's why I ended my career"

Former Dynamo Kyiv midfielder Florin Cernat has admitted that he was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2017 and it was for this reason that he was forced to end his professional career.

The Romanian soccer player was lucky that the disease was detected in time. He underwent surgery, underwent heavy treatment and years later is completely healthy.

"In 2017, when I played for Voluntari, I was diagnosed with skin cancer. I had surgery and then I started treatment, very heavy. It took away my energy, my strength, I was no longer fit, I wasn't 100% ready. I had to quit soccer to continue the treatment, because if I hadn't, I wouldn't be here now.

I had a mole on my right calf on the back. I couldn't see it, it was in the back, I didn't feel any pain. But I could feel that my pant leg was wet there, there was always a spot there, and then somehow I looked at it and saw that the mole had taken on a weirder shape and color. I went to our team doctor and he examined me too, and he said it wasn't good.

But I didn't take those words seriously at the time. I continued to play. But the doctor insisted. I went to a dermatologist. When he saw what was wrong with my foot, he said I needed to go to the hospital right away. That's when I panicked a bit because, to top it off, it started bleeding.

Then I went to the Military Hospital where I had surgery almost immediately. Everything went very well," Florin Cernat told the podcast "On Another Level".
