Bayern's sporting director: "You can't go into the season with 45 players like Chelsea"

Max Eberl, Bayern Munich's sporting director, commented on the club's decision to sell the team's central defender Matthijs de Ligt in the summer transfer window.

"I understand that there are fan favorites, but we don't make decisions based on fan preferences. We talked to Vincent (Kompany) and made a decision on the squad. Of course, we know how Matteis played, we will not speak badly of him.

But we made a decision about the defense, we needed a left-footed defender, so we signed Hiroki Ito. We spent money on Oliseh, Palinha and Hiroki. So, as a club, we have to make money.

You can't do like Chelsea and go into the season with 45 players. We spoke clearly with the player and made a decision, that's how it was," Eberl said.
