Myroslav Stupar: "Matvienko's hand is a penalty kick"

A lot of questions arose after Matvienko was awarded a penalty for a handball in the Ukraine national team's 2-3 Nations League loss to the Czech Republic. This eleven-meter kick essentially decided the fate of the match. The decision of Scottish referee Joe Beaton was commented on by former FIFA referee and refereeing expert Myroslav Stupar.

Myroslav Stupar

- Myroslav Ivanovych, what would you say about the penalty kick against the Ukrainian national team?

- The arm was not in its natural position, it was raised above the shoulder and increased the volume of the body. Everyone thought that the VAR had paid attention to another episode where Mudryk kicked an opponent leaving the penalty area in the thigh. In general, I liked the referee's work, he let us play, and I feel that he understands football. I think the decision to award an 11-meter penalty was the right one.

- But if we go back to the second moment, it seems that the violation was in the penalty area, then there is a penalty.

- Yes, there was contact, and the VAR would also consider this episode.

- And if the VAR had paid attention to Vanat's deliberate elbow to the opponent's stomach in the first half, then...

- We can say that in this episode they treated us loyally, not paying attention to this moment.
