The Georgian national team will start the third round of the Nations League group stage match against the Ukrainian national team in 66th position in the FIFA rankings (the blue and yellows are currently in 24th position).
After the September matches, the Georgian team, which won two quartet victories, rose four places in the world rankings. The 66th position is the best result for Georgia in the last 12 years. It was achieved by the team's current coach, Willy Sagnol, in three and a half years of work. However, the Georgian national team is still far from its record-breaking performance.
In September 1998, the Georgian national team of Kaladze, Arveladze, Ketzbai, Iashvili, Demetradze, and Kinkladze was ranked 42nd in the FIFA rankings. By the first month of the fall of 1998, the Georgian national team had won four matches (three friendly matches and one official match), drawn two control matches, and lost two. By the way, the team finished the year in 52nd position. Then things got worse.
As a result, in August 2015, the team was ranked 154th: the worst ranking, 156th, was only in March 1996, when Georgia was first ranked in the FIFA rankings.
When Sagnol took over the Georgian national team in February 2021, the team was ranked 89th in the rankings. Under the leadership of the French specialist, Georgia played 40 matches: Georgia won 20, drew six, and lost 14. The team rose to Division B of the League of Nations, made its Euro debut, where it reached the playoffs, and is now leading the quartet with Ukraine, Albania, and the Czech Republic.
On October 11, Georgia will play Ukraine. The match in Poznan, Poland, will start at 21:45 Kyiv time.
