"Benfica may be suspended from the competition due to financial fraud. This was reported by Globo.com.
According to the source, the Portuguese prosecutor's office is investigating a case of financial fraud by the Benfica management. The Lisbon giant faces a suspension from all competitions for a period of 6 months to 3 years.
It is reported that Benfica is accused of corruption and tax fraud during the transfers of Marcelo Hermes and Daniel dos Anjos, which took place in 2017. Back then, Lisbon paid 6.7 million euros in commissions to the players' agents. These transactions are considered suspicious by law enforcement agencies, as Benfica could have used them for money laundering.
Accordingly, the former heads of the Portuguese club, Luis Felipe Vieira and Paulo Gonçalves, also face sanctions.
