Former FIFA secretary-general compares Russia's ban to South Africa's ban, which lasted 35 years

Former FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has spoken out on the topic of Russia's expulsion from all international soccer tournaments at both club and national team level.

"I'm sure UEFA and FIFA are waiting for russia to come back. Why not? Everyone is waiting for her return. South Africa was banned by FIFA, but then returned (the South African national team was suspended from tournaments under the auspices of FIFA from 1957 to 1992 due to the policy of apartheid - ed.). "I'm sure the European association think about sports and soccer," Valcke told Russian propaganda publication SE.

Recall, Valcke was fired from FIFA in 2016 in connection with corruption scandals: was a co-conspirator in the case of obtaining South Africa the right to host the 2010 World Cup, and was also accused of illegal resale of tickets for the 2014 World Cup. In March 2021, Valcke was disqualified for 6 years and 8 months for various violations of the FIFA code of ethics.
