Ex-FIFA referee: «PSV’s goal after a throw-in is legitimate»

On November 5, the match of the 4th round of the Champions League 2024/25 took place between the teams PSV and «Girona». The match was held at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven. The game ended with a score of 4:0 in favor of the hosts.

PSV — «Girona» — 4:0

The hosts opened the scoring in the 16th minute after a throw-in, although it was clearly visible that the Dutch player stepped out of the sideline. Was there a violation of the rules?

The former FIFA referee and now an authoritative expert Myroslav Stupar assessed this game episode:

«The referee made the right decision by counting the goal. According to the rules, if at the moment of the throw-in, even a slight part of the player's foot is on the sideline, then that is not a violation. And this was exactly the case in this game episode. Only if the leg of the home player was completely in the field, then the goal would have been disallowed,» said Stupar.
