Honored coach of Ukraine Myron Markevych spoke about what he expects from today’s match of the 5th round of the main stage of the Europa League between the Dutch PSV and Donetsk’s Shakhtar.
“In my time, the players of Metalist under my leadership played away in the Europa League against PSV, and I remember we were very pleased that everything ended with the signing of a peace agreement.
Many years have passed, and the style of play of PSV has not changed: the team from Eindhoven is still focused on attacking, acts sharply on the flanks, and is tough in confrontations. A dangerous opponent.
First of all, I would advise the miners not to play defensively. And although due to a muscle contusion, PSV will likely be without their attacking leader Luuk de Jong, someone from the hosts will definitely score due to their high individual skill. Therefore, they need to try to press high, value the ball, and in the transitional phase play tactically in defense and utilize free spaces near PSV’s possessions.
By the way, Shakhtar’s crushing victory in the last round of the UPL against Inhulets should not mislead. These are different competitions, and the level of PSV’s preparation is order of magnitude higher. If the miners push the game into the opponent's half of the field with their activity, and the midfielders make unconventional moves forcing the hosts to make mistakes and get nervous, then there’s a chance that Shakhtar may not lose,” said Markevych.
