Friends, we will once again talk about the history of FC Dynamo (Kyiv). We will remember the coaches and footballers of different generations. We will discuss the achievements at home and international arenas.

UEFA Super Cup 1975 won by Dynamo

Perhaps someone will object, as Lipenko has already spoken about this many times in detail. That is true, but I will continue with the memories. After all, there are still events that were not sufficiently covered. Veteran fans know a lot. But the younger generation of fans of the famous club will discover many interesting facts from its history.

As a native of Kyiv, I am proud that there is such a famous team in my magical city.

In May 1954, as a 12-year-old boy, I managed to get to the Dynamo stadium. At that time, in a match of the next round of the national championship, Kyivans hosted the Dynamo players from Tbilisi. The stands were packed. The match ended in a “peaceful” (1:1) draw. I especially enjoyed the performance of the home goalkeeper Oleg Makarov.

I decided it was time for me to “stop” playing street football. An announcement appeared about recruitment for the football section “Young Dynamo Player.” So I, along with my friends, headed to the Dynamo arena. The attempt was successful, and we began training with Nikolai Fedorovich Fominykh and Nikolai Pavlovich Melnychenko.

In the summer of 1960, the youth team of Kyiv Dynamo became champions of the USSR. I guarded the goal of that team. The tournament took place in Minsk, and we ended up in the group of finalists. We started with a draw against Shakhtar (then Stalino). Then we defeated the Dynamo players from Tbilisi. In the decisive match, we faced Moscow Spartak. Only a victory would satisfy us. And we achieved it — 3:0!

We returned to Kyiv with the Cup of the winners of the championship and gold medals. Vadim Sosnikhin, Kolya Pinchuk, and Dima Linnik were invited to the reserve team of Dynamo. I was also at the tryouts, but my mother insisted on my enrollment in Taras Shevchenko University.

I graduated with a degree in translation and referencing of the English language. But I became a sports journalist. I worked at Ukrainian television, radio, and popular newspapers. The football topic has always been at the center of my professional interest.

With Dynamo and the Ukraine national team, I visited many countries. I covered world and European championships, as well as European cup matches. I announced over 500 matches before their kickoff while working on the field with a microphone.

“Dynamo” (Kyiv) is the most titled club of the former Union and Ukraine. It participated in all 54 Soviet championships. The Kyivans won 13 of them (a record). They claimed “silver” 11 times and “bronze” 3 times. Dynamo is a nine-time holder of the USSR Cup. And this is, of course, far from all the achievements of the Kyiv club.

So let’s flip through the pages of the history of FC Dynamo (Kyiv).

The First “Silver”

In the first Soviet championship among clubs (1936), the Kyivans became the second team in the tournament. The teams that started were: “Dynamo” (Kyiv), Moscow “Dynamo”, “Spartak”, TsDKA, “Lokomotiv”, Leningrad — “Dynamo” and “Krasnaya Zarya”.

The first Kyiv goal in the championship (May 24, 1936) was scored by Nikolai Makhiniya (against Moscow “Dynamo”).

First Cup Triumph

Dynamo (Kyiv) won its first significant trophy in 1954. On the path to the Cup final, Kyiv defeated the “Spartak” from Vilnius (4:2), Moscow “Spartak” (3:1), TsDKA (3:1), and “Zenit” (1:0).

The decisive match of the tournament took place on November 16 in Moscow. Our Dynamo players met “Spartak” from Yerevan in a rainy and foggy evening. And we snatched victory 2:1. The “Crystal” ball was scored by Mikhail Koman. Congratulations were also received by: Oleg Makarov, Vitaly Golubev, Arkady Larionov, Mikhail Mikhaliin, Tiberiy Popovich, Viktor Terentyev, Pavel Vinykovatov, Andrei Zazroev, Viktor Fomin, Ernst Yust, Alexander Koltsov, Vladimir Bogdanovich, Vladimir Grammatikopulo and their mentor Oleg Alexandrovich Oshenko.

The train on which the Dynamo players returned with the Cup was greeted by hundreds of fans at the Kyiv train station. In the future, our club conquered cup heights seven more times in the Union. But that victory, achieved in 1954, was the first and unforgettable.

The “Golden” Start

Seven years passed, and a second major success on Dynamo street occurred in the championship.

On October 17, 1961, playing in Kyiv against Kharkiv “Avangard” in a draw (0:0), one round before the finish of the competition, accumulating 45 points, Kyiv “Dynamo” became unattainable for the competitors of the Moscow clubs “Torpedo”, “Spartak”, CSKA and “Lokomotiv.”

The Kyivans were the first to break the 25-year “golden” hegemony of Moscow clubs in the former USSR championship.

In the team, led by Vyacheslav Solovyov and his assistants Mikhail Koman and Viktor Terentyev, the following players demonstrated outstanding performances: Oleg Makarov, Viktor Kanevsky (captain), Valery Lobanovsky, Oleg Bazilievich, Yuri Voинов, Anatoliy Suchkov, Viktor Serebryanikov, Yozhef Sabo, Vasily Turyanchik, Andrei Biba, Vladimir Shchegolev, Vladimir Anufrienko, Valentin Troyanovsky, Nikolai Koltsov, Vitaliy Shcherbakov, Nikolai Kashtanov, Igor Zaytsev.

Viktor Kanevsky scored 18 goals in that unforgettable tournament, Valery Lobanovsky — 10 goals, Oleg Bazilievich — 9 goals. Kyiv won 12 sets of gold medals in Soviet championships.

Two Cup Winners' Cups

Dynamo performed successfully on the European stage.

On May 14, 1975, at the St. Jakob stadium in Basel (Switzerland), in the final of the Cup Winners' Cup, Dynamo (Kyiv) faced Ferencváros (Budapest). Our club won confidently — 3:0. Vladimir Onyshchenko scored two goals and Oleg Blokhin one.

Their partners in that match were: Eugene Rudakov, Vladimir Troshkin, Mikhail Fomenko, Stefan Reshko, Viktor Matviyenko, Vladimir Muntyan, Viktor Kolotov, Leonid Buryak, Anatoliy Konkov.

Valery Lobanovsky and Oleg Bazilievich led the team to this brilliant victory.

On May 2, 1986. The Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred in Ukraine. And at that time, the final of the Cup Winners' Cup was held at the Gerland stadium in Lyon, France. Dynamo (Kyiv) faced Atlético (Madrid). And, just like in their first European final, the Kyivans won — 3:0. Goals were scored by Alexander Zavarov, Oleg Blokhin, and Vadim Yevtushenko. Besides this glorious trio, the following players participated in Dynamo's triumph: Viktor Chanov, Vladimir Bessonov, Sergey Baltacha, Andrey Bal, Oleg Kuznetsov, Anatoliy Demyanyenko, Vasily Rats, Pavel Yakovenko, Ivan Yaremchuk, Igor Belanov. And once again, the brilliant ensemble was led by the genius Valery Lobanovsky.

In the fight for the first UEFA Super Cup, they could bring down “Bavaria” on their “loparok”

Why am I emphasizing the word first? Because, like you, I hope that the Dynamo players will win the second UEFA Super Cup.

In the battle for this prestigious trophy, Dynamo — the holder of the Cup Winners' Cup (1975) — twice defeated the strongest club of the Champions Cup, the famous “Bavaria.”

The first victory (1:0) was on September 9 in Munich, which German journalists called accidental. In the 63rd minute, Blokhin, having outplayed three defenders, struck the net of Sepp Maier.

And in the second match (in Kyiv on October 6), Oleg beat the German national team's goalkeeper twice. By the way, Maier, along with Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, and Jupp Kapellmann, were champions of the world in 1974 at that time.

Under the guidance of Valery Lobanovsky, the team made a stunning gift to their fans. The trophy was won by: Eugene Rudakov, Vladimir Troshkin, Mikhail Fomenko, Stefan Reshko, Valery Zuyev, Vladimir Muntyan, Anatoliy Konkov, Vladimir Veremeyev, Leonid Buryak, Vladimir Onyshchenko, Oleg Blokhin, Peter Slobodyan, Alexander Damin.

The Dynamo Football Troop

Players from different generations have created the glorious history of the Kyiv club.

Oleg Blokhin (1975), Igor Belanov (1986), Andrei Shevchenko (2004) — recipients of the “Ballon d'Or” (France Football) for the best football player in Europe.

Yuri Voinov — European champion (1960), Viktor Serebryanikov, Leonid Ostrovsky, and Viktor Chanov — participants in three World Cups.

Alexei Mkhailichenko — Olympic champion (Seoul, Republic of Korea, 1988), and he is also a champion of three countries — the former USSR, Italy, and Scotland.

Yevgeny Rudakov kept a clean sheet in 208 matches, Alexander Shovkovsky (current Dynamo coach) — a 14-time champion of Ukraine (an absolute record among goalkeepers).

A graduate of the Dynamo school, Hero of Ukraine, honored master of sports, five-time champion of the country Andrei Shevchenko (of his “Ballon d'Or” we have already mentioned) — a winner of the Champions League and holder of the UEFA Super Cup as part of AC Milan.

Shevchenko served as the coach of the national team of Ukraine. Now Andrei Nikolayevich heads the UAF. He is the sixth president of the national football association.

Victory Designers

Throughout the years, the FC Dynamo has seen excellent coaches: Oleg Oshenko, Vyacheslav Solovyov, Viktor Maslov, Alexander Sevidov, Valery Lobanovsky (ranked among the best five coaches in Europe and the top ten in the world), Oleg Bazilievich, Mikhail Koman…

After finishing their playing careers, Yozhef Sabo, Mikhail Fomenko, Anatoliy Demyanyenko, Alexei Mikhailichenko, Leonid Buryak, Oleg Blokhin, Alexander Khatskevich, Sergey Rebrov returned to the coaching bridge of Dynamo. Currently, the coach of the Dynamo, and a former great goalkeeper, is Alexander Shovkovsky.

***

On December 13, 1991, the Football Federation of Ukraine withdrew from the all-union federation.

The championship, the Cup, and the Supercup of independent Ukraine began.

Kyiv “Dynamo” continues to confirm its high class. The club is a 16-time champion of Ukraine, a 13-time cup winner, and a 9-time SuperCup holder of the country.

Dynamo leads in its 34th championship of Ukraine. The fans of the team are waiting for their favorites to win the 17th championship title. In case of success — a third gold star will shine over the club's emblem.

Let me remind you that on May 13, 1927, a bright star of “Dynamo” from Kyiv rose on the football horizon, a club that will celebrate its glorious 100th anniversary with fans on May 13, 2027.
