As is known, Kyiv’s "Dynamo" won the golden medals of the championship of the now non-existent country more than any other club of the former union—13 times!

In 1985, our Dynamo players won their eleventh title. With this indicator, they equaled Moscow’s "Dynamo," which was then headed by the odious Eduard Malofeev. The Kyiv team was determined to win the 1986 tournament to become the leader in that "golden" movement.

Dynamo with the Cup Winners' Cup 1986

I note that the team of Valery Lobanovsky retained the championship squad. On the winning wave were—Viktor Chanov, Oleg Kuznetsov, Alexei Mikhaylichenko, Vasily Yevseyev, Ivan Yaremchuk, Oleg Blokhin, Igor Belanov, Alexander Zavarov, Andrei Bal, Sergey Baltacha, Vadim Yevtushenko, Vladimir Bessonov, Anatoly Demyanenko, Vasily Ratz.

Due to the participation of 12 players from the Kyiv club in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, its matches in the domestic arena were constantly postponed. Therefore, from July 4 to December 7, the Kyiv Dynamo played 23 (!) matches in the championship. They withstood great workloads and, earning points, got closer to their intended goal.

The 100,000 Spectators Rejoiced

The fate of the golden medals was decided in the final match on December 7 in Kyiv, where the Dynamo teams—local and Moscow—met. The interest in the meeting was grand. The stands of Ukraine's main arena gathered an audience of 100,000.

Only a victory would satisfy the home team in achieving the lofty task. A draw or a defeat would drop Kyiv to the "bronze" position. "Silver" would go to "Spartak."

The ensemble under the guidance of Valery Lobanovsky achieved the desired result—2:1! Vasily Ratz and Igor Belanov distinguished themselves for the winners. For the twelfth time, the team from the capital of Ukraine conquered the championship peak.

It is difficult to describe what was happening in the stands after the final whistle.

In that championship, Kyiv scored 53 goals against 15 opponents and conceded 33. Chanov and Ratz played all 30 matches, Demyanenko 29, Yakovenko 28, Yevtushenko and Kuznetsov 27 each, Bal 26, Blokhin 23, Belanov 22, Mikhaylichenko and Zavarov 20 each, Bessonov 16, Yevseyev and Yaremchuk 15 each, Baltacha 13...

In addition to the title in the national championship in the 1986 season, the Kyiv Dynamo became holders of many team and individual awards.

The best player of the union championship was Alexander Zavarov. Previously, such an achievement belonged to Andrei Bibis, Vladimir Muntyan, Yevgeny Rudakov, and Oleg Blokhin (three times).

The prize for the best goalkeeper was awarded to Chanov. Before Viktor, the holders of this award were Viktor Bannikov and Rudakov (three times).

In the list of "33 best," 12 players from "Dynamo" (Kyiv) were included.

Blokhin, like Vladimir Muntyan before him, became a seven-time champion of the country.

Valery Lobanovsky led one team to golden success for the seventh time (a record) over the course of 13 years. No one had previously achieved such success.

Igor Belanov’s "Golden Ball"

A wonderful announcement was received on the penultimate day of the outgoing 1986 year. The winner of the "Golden Ball" from France Football as the best player in Europe was Igor Belanov. In the poll of the popular and authoritative publication, he scored 84 points. The Dynamo player surpassed the top scorer of the 1986 World Cup, England's Gary Lineker (62 votes), and the second-top scorer, Spain's Emilio Butragueño (59).

Second Cup Winners' Cup

In the spring of that glorious and memorable year, Europe talked about "Dynamo" from Kyiv again. On May 2, in the final match of the Cup Winners' Cup in Lyon, France, Lobanovsky and his team defeated (3:0) the Madrid club "Atletico" and seized this trophy for the second time. Goals against the Spaniards were scored by: Zavarov, Blokhin, and Yevtushenko. Along with them, victory was achieved by: Chanov, Bessonov, Baltacha, Bal, Kuznetsov, Demyanenko, Ratz, Yakovenko, Yaremchuk, and Belanov.

According to a poll by the popular publication World Soccer, Valery Vasilyevich Lobanovsky was named the second coach in the world in 1986.

And also. The results of control matches for that year for Kyiv's "Dynamo." With "Manchester City" (England) — 1:1, "Botafogo" (Brazil) — 6:0, "Anderlecht" (Belgium) — 1:0, "Real" (Spain, Madrid) — 3:2, "Saint-Étienne" (France) — 0:0.
