The Dynamo legend Yozhef Sabo shared when he celebrates his birthday in a leap year.
Yozhef Sabo— Yozhef Yozhefovych, when do you celebrate your birthday in a leap year, when should we congratulate you?
— On the night of February 28 to March 1 and no other way. I used to celebrate on March 1 until my mother told me how it all really happened: "I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but you were born at home on February 29 at 20:30. Your grandmother, who was a midwife, assisted in the birth. She said, "No one knows when he was born; let’s tell everyone it was March 1." Only years later did I learn the truth from my mother—that I was born on February 29. Since then, I only celebrate on the 29th, and in non-leap years, I celebrate on the night of February 28 to March 1.
— Can you recall a birthday that stood out during your football career, perhaps when players or coaches gifted you something?
— No, there was nothing like that. Anyway, I don’t remember. People would congratulate me, that’s it. During my career, I was always busy—either training camps or games.
— Will you celebrate your birthday in any way this year?
— No, especially since I have problems with my leg. What celebrations can there be? I need to live a little longer. Plus, there’s a war going on; God willing, it will end soon. That would be the best gift for me. The country is facing great trouble. Many people have been left homeless because of the bombings by the Russians. They need help.
