The Brazilian champion and winner of the Copa Libertadores — the club “Botafogo” — has announced the dismissal of head coach Renato Paiva.
The Portuguese specialist was sent into retirement after the defeat to “Palmeiras” in the 1/8 finals of the Club World Cup. According to the club, the decision was made on Sunday, of which Paiva was immediately informed.
In a statement, “Botafogo” thanked the coach and his staff for their work, particularly for the historic victory over “Paris Saint-Germain” and reaching the playoffs of the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Cup.
Paiva took charge of the team in February after the departure of Arthur Jorge — the architect of last year’s triumphs of the club. Despite the loud international victories, in the national championship, “Botafogo” is currently only eighth, lagging 6 points behind the leader “Flamengo.” There are 27 matches remaining until the end of the season, and in August, the Brazilians will play against “Quito” in the 1/8 finals of the Copa Libertadores.
