Ukrainian national team midfielder Georgiy Sudakov commented on the draw (1:1) in yesterday’s match against Azerbaijan in the qualifiers for the World Cup 2026.
“It’s hard to say anything right now... In general, we had enough chances and we were winning 1:0. But one counterattack from Azerbaijan — and a penalty. We were unlucky in that moment.
The pitch was very heavy, very poor, but it was the same for everyone. So there’s no point in talking about it anymore.
The Azerbaijan national team is good, disciplined in defense. They have several qualified players who could create some chances. But otherwise, I didn’t see anything special in this team.
We controlled the game, scored a goal. Basically, everything was good. We were on the ball, continued to create chances, wanted to play. But, I repeat, there was just one unfortunate counterattack from the opponent. We have already forgotten about that moment, but the referee checked VAR and awarded a penalty. It happens. I believe it’s more of a coincidence than a regular occurrence.
Of course, we are all disappointed. We understood that we needed to take all three points in this match. We aimed for that but it didn’t happen. We will analyze the game. I think everyone should first make a personal analysis of their performance in the national team, and come to the next camp with a completely different attitude and quality,” said Trubin on MEGOGO.
