Totti: «Spalletti came to Roma to get rid of me»

Former AS Roma midfielder Francesco Totti spoke about his career ending in 2017.

Luciano Spalletti and Francesco Totti

«Spalletti came to Roma in 2016 to force me out. He had full support of the club. There were always problems with him. He was the complete opposite of the Luciano who worked with Roma in 2005. Maybe he thinks I fired him by bringing Ranieri in his place, but that’s not true. Management called me and other players and asked who we wanted to see: Mancini, Ranieri, or others.

When I left Roma, it was the club officials who told me I had to end my career: they came to my house one day and said I would play in the last derby. I’m not stupid. I knew that sooner or later I would have to finish, but I still felt it physically and mentally. Maybe Roma disappointed me more than Spalletti, the club considered me a burden. I said I would play even for free, give everything for Roma. And after that, the situation still didn’t change,» said Luciano Spalletti.
