US President Donald Trump Threatens to Relocate 2026 World Cup Matches from Boston: Here’s Why

The US President continues to leverage sports for his political gain. This time, Trump has threatened to strip Boston of the right to host 2026 World Cup matches.

Next year, another World Cup will take place. For the first time in history, the tournament will be co-hosted by three countries — the USA, Mexico, and Canada, reports ESPN. The majority of the matches will take place in the USA. One of the host cities is Boston.

The head of the White House has a conflict with the city’s mayor, Michelle Wu. Because of this, Trump even threatened to take away Boston’s right to host the 2026 World Cup matches.

“We can take them away. I love the people of Boston and I know all the tickets are sold out. But their mayor is no good,” Trump stated.

The main reason for the conflict between the US President and Michelle is the mass unrest in Boston. The city has become an epicenter of protests against Trump’s immigration policy. People are also opposing mass deportations and are personally against Elon Musk. In this conflict, Wu has sided with the protesters, which displeased the US President.

It’s worth noting that Boston’s Gillette Stadium accommodates 64,600 fans. It is set to host five group stage matches for the 2026 World Cup, as well as one match each for the Round of 16 and the Quarterfinals. The tournament itself will take place from June 11 to July 19.
