The head coach of Odesa’s «Chornomorets» Oleksandr Kucher shared his expectations for today’s 2026 World Cup qualifier match between France and Ukraine.
— Oleksandr, how do you assess Ukraine’s chances for a positive result in France?
— Of course, I want to assess them positively, but if we’re being realistic — it will be very difficult. My opinion is: hopefully, we’ll get a draw.
— Can we really beat France now?
— Yes, we can. It all depends on us. If we go into the game having already lost, then nothing good will come of it. We must believe in our strength, give it our all, and then everything can work out. I don’t see anything impossible here — in football, anything is possible.
— But some say we should save our strength for Iceland. What do you think?
— If you go into one game at 50%, nothing good will come of the other one either. I see no point in saving energy. We have the opportunity to fight for first place, and we have a good squad. The next game is only on Sunday — we can recover. That’s how all of Europe plays. It might be tough, but giving the French first place without a fight is wrong.
— What weaknesses do you see in the French?
— There’s no need to look for them. If there is dedication, if the players fight for each other, help and guide in every part of the field, anything is possible.
— What should our players avoid doing in the match against France?
— They must not make mistakes near their penalty area. We know that every French player is dangerous one-on-one. They are very physically strong and technically equipped, so we need to be extremely attentive, covering for each other.
— Currently, Zabarniy is being criticized in France. Will this affect his performance for the national team?
— I don’t think so. He’s experienced enough, not so young to pay attention to that. Moreover, the Ukraine national team will not be playing as the main force. When the team defends in medium or low blocks, it’s much easier for him. At PSG, he has to play higher, as the team acts as the main force — it’s more complicated. But I think he will adapt, and everything will be fine.
— Dovbyk is out. Who do you think will play in attack against France?
— It’s hard to say. This is the coaching staff’s decision — they see best who is being prepared and fits the tactics. Perhaps Vanat will come out — if we play as the second number, his speed could be an advantage. But again — the coaches will decide.
— Predict the outcome of the match.
— I want the Ukraine national team to win, but I think it will be a draw.
