The president of the Spanish football association, Javier Tebas, accused Madrid’s 'Real' of hypocrisy. The official stated that representatives of the 'Merengues' were the most vocal opponents of moving the Spanish league match between 'Villarreal' and 'Barcelona' to Miami.
’For weeks, we have been hearing that today is a 'historic day for Spanish sport' because an NFL game is being held in Madrid. Front pages, special features, red carpet... great publicity for the NFL in Spain, and the Spanish stadium is its showcase.
And the most impressive: the stadium belongs to the same club that led the crusade for 'integrity' against the official La Liga match in Miami... and now is happily renting it out for a fee, of course. Then, the players and officials of the clubs repeated the same story with identical displays of competition corruption, sending letters to all possible institutions — I don’t know what stopped them from complaining to the Pope.
The Miami match was to guarantee a sold-out event, an event schedule equal to or greater than what we have today, and it facilitated the internationalization of our league. We were talking about one match out of the 380 that La Liga holds throughout the season.
It was clear that disinformation and a lack of foresight prevailed. The issue was not integrity, traditions, or information: the problem was who was behind it. It was La Liga, an institution everyone wants to control: some to prevent its growth and thus pave the way for their mega-competitions, others to squeeze more money out of it, and still others to fuel their political campaigns,' Tebas wrote on his X page.
