Ivan Hetsko: «We could have drawn someone a little weaker...»

The author of the first goal in the history of the Ukrainian national team, Ivan Hetsko, assured that our country’s main team is expecting a tough match against Sweden.

In the playoff semifinals, Ukraine will play against Sweden. Will it be a tough game?

— I think it’s a tough opponent. We could have drawn someone a little weaker (laughs). Well, but both teams have equal chances. I think there are no easy matches in playoffs. So we need to prepare and prove to everyone that the Ukrainian national team should play in the World Cup.

The Swedes have two strong forwards Isak from Liverpool and Djokeresh from Arsenal. Will it be difficult for our defenders?

— Yes, it will be tough. That’s why I’m saying there could’ve been an easier team, but that’s football, as they say. We need to play, win, and prove ourselves.

The Swedes flopped in the qualifiers and reached the playoffs through the Nations League. Will this play to our advantage?

— I don’t think so. I believe Ukrainian footballers should clearly understand that the Swedes will throw everything into the fight. They have nothing to lose, they have a chance, and they will fight for it. And we have to prove to everyone that we can advance and play in the World Cup.

In case of victory over Sweden, we will face either Poland or Albania next.

— These opponents are also very challenging. We can see how Albania looks now. It might even be a bit easier to play against Poland, but I wouldn’t emphasize that. These are two solid teams with the goal of reaching the World Cup.
