The International Football Federation (FIFA) and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) are considering changes to football rules in the context of defining offside, Mundo Deportivo reports.
Until now, an offside position for an attacking team player was fixed on any part of the body that can score a goal. The introduction of the VAR system allowed referees to notice the slightest offside positions.
However, FIFA and IFAB have been discussing a different interpretation of offside for some time. As a result of the consultations, the organisations have developed a new concept of offside. According to it, an offside position will be recorded only if the player is behind the line of the last defender with his whole body at the time of the pass, and not just a separate part (head, leg, etc.).
The new offside concept has already been discussed at several meetings of the International Football Council, which implements or changes football rules. First, it is planned to test it in the lower divisions of Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands, and then in professional football.
