President of UAF Andriy Shevchenko answered current questions related to the situation in Ukrainian football in an interview with “Il Messaggero”.

Andriy Shevchenko

— What is the current football situation in Ukraine?

— The situation in Ukraine is incredibly challenging due to the ongoing war. Matches are held under strict security protocols, often without spectators and in regions where the risk is minimal. Our clubs and national teams participate in national and international tournaments. For us, football is not just a sport: it is a symbol of hope and resistance. The Ukrainian Football Association is doing everything possible to support players, coaches, and fans, ensuring that football thrives even in these difficult times.

— How many human lives among athletes and footballers has the war claimed?

— It has already been confirmed that over 200 representatives of the football community have died since the large-scale war began. This includes players, coaches, and other sports professionals, and the number continues to rise.

— Has your family suffered any losses?

— The war has deeply affected every Ukrainian family. I see a lot of pain around me. The losses our nation has suffered - both in terms of human lives and the destruction of homes and communities - are heartbreaking. This tragedy unites us in grief, but it also strengthens our resolve to fight for a peaceful and free future for Ukraine. Every Ukrainian carries these losses with them, which motivate us to move forward.

— How many football fields and facilities have been damaged?

— Sports, like many other areas of life, have been severely affected by the war. As a result of enemy strikes, more than 500 sports facilities have suffered: 77 stadiums, 102 sports bases and schools, 174 sports halls. Of these, 101 buildings have been completely or partially destroyed. In some regions of Ukraine, more than 60% of sports infrastructure has been lost.

Because of the war, it is difficult to talk about reconstruction and the construction of new facilities, but progress is being made nonetheless. After Russia's invasion, as a United24 ambassador, I participated in numerous charitable events to raise funds for the restoration of football infrastructure. One of these events was the Game4Ukraine football match at Stamford Bridge in London. Thanks to this initiative, we managed to raise funds for the restoration of a school in the Chernihiv region, destroyed by a Russian missile. Reconstruction work has already begun.

— Which image hurts you the most?

— One of the most heartbreaking images for me is the small patients in children's hospitals who have been wounded in this war, and entire cities destroyed by enemy carpet bombings.

As for my personal emotional connections, I would mention the destroyed “Sunny” stadium in Kharkiv. It was built for Euro 2012 and symbolized hope, unity, and the joy of football. Today it lies in ruins and is a reminder of the devastation caused by the war. To ensure that the world understands the depth of this loss, we brought part of the “Sunny” stadium's stands to Euro 2024. It has already been exhibited in cities like Dusseldorf, Munich, Berlin, and Paris. The sight of these ruins has touched thousands of people, reminding them of the cost of war and Ukraine's resistance.

— What are your expectations for 2025?

— In 2025 I expect continued growth and progress for Ukrainian football, despite the difficulties we face. The situation is complex, but our teams, both senior and youth, show great promise. We will work hard to ensure that Ukrainian football becomes stronger on the international stage, focusing on the development of young talents and achieving success in European and world competitions. Moreover, I foresee the development of mass, adaptive football, especially for people with amputated limbs, using the opportunities of this sport to overcome the emotional and physical traumas of the war.

— The West has been close to Ukraine, but do you have a feeling that it is becoming accustomed to the war and that this may lead to a gradual decline in support for your country?

— Western support has played a fundamental role in helping Ukraine defend itself and uphold the values of freedom, democracy, and unity. However, over time, the attention of the global community may change. To prevent this, we must continue to share our story, emphasizing that the war is not just a localized event, but a battle for universal principles. By demonstrating the resilience of our people, we can keep Ukraine at the center of international attention. I use my voice and my platform to tell the world about our struggle.

— Does it hurt you to see that football continues with its usual problems and controversies, while Ukrainian teams are forced to play their home international matches abroad?

— Football has always meant more to Ukrainians than just a game. Seeing football continue in other parts of the world while our teams have to constantly play abroad or in emergency conditions serves as a stark reminder of what we are going through. Our clubs and players have shown incredible determination, representing Ukraine on the international stage despite unimaginable difficulties. They play not just for trophies, but to remind the world of Ukraine's struggle and resilience.
